Diego Suarez (Antsiranana) is the gateway to the tropical North of Madagascar, named after two Portuguese admirals (Diego Diaz and Fernando Surarez) who founded the city, known affectionately by many simply as Diego.
The Malagasy name means “port” given its importance as one of the countries most strategic deepwater ports, but it is the setting that people find stunning. The harbour itself is surrounded by hills and sugarloaf mountains to the east, whilst the faded colonial buildings could do with a lick of paint, they are full of character and charm, combining influences from the Arabs, Creoles and Comorans who have settled here over the years.
Amber Mountain National Park
Named after the amber resin found in the trees here, the park is home to some extraordinary plant and animal life, in particular chameleons, with huge ferns and strangler figs adding drama to a park where beautiful walking trails wind their way past tropical waterfalls.
