Having been the capital of Georgia for more than 1,500 years, Tbilisi is rich in history. However, as a city that hints at a new-found wealth, Tbilisi is undoubtedly changing. Spend a day visiting the sites and exploring the Old Town including the Narikala Fortress, the Metekhi Church and Citadel, the nearby sulphur springs and 18th-century Persian-style royal baths.
Visiting the sulphur bathhouses in the Abanotubani area of Tbilisi is an experience, especially during the winter months when it’s colder. Today many people visit for a soak, scrub and traditional massage beneath the domed roofs. We recommend Orbeliani Bathhouse with its beautiful mosque like exterior and slick operation inside.
Surrounded by gigantic mountains, Kazbegi is a picturesque settlement overlooked by one of the highest peaks of all – Mount Kazbek which sits at 5,047 metres – one of the six 5,000 metre peaks of the Caucasus. This beautiful region can be explored on foot or by 4×4 and is home to mountaintop churches, canyons, waterfalls and ancient cave towns as well as traditional villages where you will be welcomed with typical Georgian hospitality.
