Selinda Canoe Trail, Selinda, Botswana

Selinda Reserve

Selinda Reserve is a privately owned, 135,000-hectare concession located on the flood plains of the Selinda spillway and part of the great Linyanti Reserve.

Exclusive and high-end privately owned camps combine with excellent guides to make the Selinda Reserve one of our favourite concessions. Here, it’s possible to join a unique canoe and walking safari – or just enjoy the expanse of land and fantastic wildlife in relative privacy.

A little more about the Selinda Reserve

The Selinda Reserve is a private 135,000-hectare wildlife area which follows the floodplains of the Selinda Spillway, the waterway that winds its way through the dry countryside to connect the Okavango Delta in the west of the Linyanti and Kwando wetlands and rivers in the east.

Where to stay

Some of the wonderful places to stay that we frequently recommended.

Zarafa Camp £££££

  • Botswana
  • Safari and Wildlife Lodge

Located near the Zibadianja Lagoon, Zarafa can easily lay claim to the most exclusive, intimate and beautiful camp in Botswana. With just four marquee-style tents, on raised decks made from reclaimed teak railroad sleepers and Indonesian mahogany, they are designed to soak up the magnificent vistas in style. Inside, the combination of Oriental fabrics, deep copper claw-foot baths and soft leather chairs set the scene, with the open-sided (yet netted) canvas walls, keeps the feeling light and airy.

Selinda Explorers Camp £££££

  • Botswana
  • Safari and Wildlife Lodge

Selinda Explorers Camp is a simple, yet extremely elegant camp which transports you back to a bygone era with the atmosphere and style of early explorers. Located in a private concession, on the remote banks of the Selinda Spillway, the prolific game here can be explored on foot, canoe or by game drive. This exclusive camp has only 4 en-suite tents, a general mess area, and a fire pit under the stars. Breezy and bohemian, small luxurious touches are scattered around, as are large comfortable cushions on which to laze upon whilst you await dinner prepared by the chef.

Rachael Tallents

Adventure, discovery and my curiosity for people and the natural world is what drives my love of travelling.  I am grateful for my parents’ desire to explore, and from an early age my eyes were open to diverse landscapes, cultures, and underwater worlds.

For the last 16 years, I have worked for a leading luxury tour operator designing incredible journeys for discerning clients and travelled to some magical places. I am excited to have joined Steppes Travel, and to be working for a company with such strong ethical and sustainable values.

Illona Cross

Born in a small South African town, I have always followed my passion for nature and discovery. After studying Nature Conservation in Pretoria, I was one of the first women to complete a very tough cadetship in the Natal Parks Board. It was here where I cut my teeth in African wildlife management.

Chris Johnston

Chris is the Conde Nast Traveller chosen Specialist for Africa.

25 years ago, my first trip to Africa took on a life of its own. I planned for three months, I stayed for two years. Whilst there, I was mistaken for a priest, attacked by sharks and arrested. Yet the countless, clattering journeys opened my eyes to the beauty of the landscapes and the grace of the people. My recent trips are undoubtedly more comfortable, but the welcome is as warm as ever and the best experiences are still those I never see coming.
